An active trading in cross-border transactions was recorded in the first month of the year

At the end of the first month of the year, 2.241 transactions were concluded on the gas exchange, which is 5% more than last month (December 2021 – 2.134). In January, 658 GWh of natural gas was traded on the GET Baltic exchange, of which 278 GWh were cross-border transactions. Compared to the same period last year, the volume of cross-border transactions increased by 149% (112 GWh in January 2021). Cross-border trading were mainly affected by increased price differences between different market areas. Trading on the GET Baltic exchange, together with the allocated cross-border capacities, allows exchange participants to conclude transactions at the best price offered in the entire region. 48 participants of the exchange actively submitted orders, all of them successfully concluded transactions. In total, during January orders submitted to buy gas amounted to 2 TWh and to sell – 3.3 TWh.

The gas prices in the region rose for the past 9 months in a raw and have stabilized in January. With the prices of individual transactions ranging from 70.01 EUR/MWh to 118 EUR/MWh, a lower value of the Baltic and Finnish natural gas price index BGSI, which measures price changes on a daily market, was recorded on the gas exchange. Compared to the previous month, it decreased from 94.12 EUR/MWh to 93.17 EUR/MWh. In January, the BGSI at the Lithuanian market area amounted to 96.15 EUR/MWh (↓ 3%), at the Latvian-Estonian common market area to 92.91 EUR/MWh (↓ 1%) and in Finland to 94.04 EUR/MWh (↑ 2%).
