In January, trading volumes grew by 25%, while gas prices increased by 4%

In the first month of 2025, 3,369 transactions were concluded on the GET Baltic exchange, trading 1.2 TWh of natural gas. Compared to December, January saw a 12% increase in the number of trades (2,996 in December 2024) and a 24% increase in trading volumes (875GWh in December 2024). In January, the Lithuanian market area accounted for more than half of the total volume traded – 643 GWh (55%), the Latvian-Estonian common market area – 262 GWh (23% of the total), and the Finnish market area – 253 GWh (22% of the total). Exchange participants were active in placing orders throughout January, with 3.7 TWh of gas purchase orders and 7.9 TWh of gas sales orders. Compared to December, the volume of orders placed to buy and sell gas increased by 61% and 32% respectively. 55 exchange participants actively placed orders on the exchange.

In January, the Baltic-Finnish Gas Spot Index (BGSI), which captures changes in natural gas prices on the daily market, was 48.92 EUR/MWh, up by 4% compared to December (46.96 EUR/MWh). BGSI value in January on the Lithuanian market area increased by 4% to49.51 EUR/MWh, while the Latvian-Estonian and Finland market areas both saw an increase of 5%. The monthly BGSI values for the latter market areas were 48.18 EUR/MWh and 48.57 EUR/MWh respectively. Individual transaction prices on the exchange in January ranged from 39.00 EUR/MWh to 60.11 EUR/MWh.
