The gas price on the exchange decreased by a fifth in March
In March, the BGSI Baltic-Finnish Natural Gas Price Index (BGSI), the Baltic-Finnish Gas Spot Index (BGSI), which captures changes in natural gas prices on the daily market, amounted to 42.83 EUR/MWh, 22% lower than in February (54.75 EUR/MWh). The BGSI value declined across all market areas in March: on the Lithuanian market area by 22% to 43.48 EUR/MWh, on the common Latvian-Estonian market area by 22% to 41.77 EUR/MWh and in Finland by 21% to 42.72 EUR/MWh. Individual transaction prices on the exchange in March ranged from 35.00 EUR/MWh to 65.00 EUR/MWh.
In March, 2,871 transactions were concluded on the GET Baltic exchange, trading a total of 866 GWh of natural gas (compared to 1.34 TWh in February). A quarter (240 GWh) of the total traded volume consisted of cross-border (ICA) transactions. In March, more than half of the total traded volume on the exchange was purchased at the Lithuanian market area – 464 GWh (54%), while 193 GWh (22%) was traded at the common Latvia-Estonia market area, and 209 GWh (24%) in Finland. A total of 57 exchange participants actively placed orders on the exchange.
In the first quarter of 2025, 9,959 transactions were executed on the GET Baltic exchange, amounting to 3.4 TWh of natural gas traded, 500 GWh more than in the first quarter of 2024, when 2.9 TWh of natural gas was traded. The volume traded on the monthly market in the first quarter of the year was 32 GWh. Three new participants from Poland and Belgium registered on the exchange during the first quarter of the year.
