In May, the gas price on the exchange rose by 10%
In May, the trading volume on the natural gas exchange reached 452 GWh, with 2,133 transactions, all being concluded on the daily market. In the first five months of the year, a total of 4 TWh of natural gas were traded on the exchange. Cross-border (ICA) transactions accounted for almost a quarter (113MWh) of the total volume traded in May, which is a 25% increase from last month. More than half (51%) of the gas was purchased on the Lithuanian market area, while the Latvian-Estonian common market area and the Finnish market area accounted for 23% and 26%, respectively.
The Baltic-Finnish Gas Spot Index (BGSI), which captures changes in natural gas prices on the daily market, increased by 10% in May to 36.56 EUR/MWh (compared to 33.30 EUR/MWh in April). As cross-border transaction turnover increased, price difference between different trading market areas continued to decrease. In the Lithuanian market area, BGSI reached 37.04 EUR/MWh (↑17%), in the common Latvian-Estonian market area it reached 36.00 EUR/MWh (↑9%), while in Finland it reached 36.25 EUR/MWh (↑5%). The prices of individual transactions in May ranged from 30.00 EUR/MWh to 49.00 EUR/MWh.
