GET Baltic captures a record breaking month – trading volumes exceeded 1.1 TWh

Despite the unusually warm weather in February, trading on the natural gas exchange remained active. 1.1 TWh of natural gas changed hands during February 2020 – it is the highest monthly traded volume since the establishment of the Exchange. Record high volumes were recorded on both – daily and monthly markets. 1,900 transactions were concluded on a daily market, in total traded volume amounted to 686 GWh: 50% of it was purchased in Lithuania (791 transactions), 9% in the common Latvian-Estonian market area (116 transactions) and 41% in Finland (993 transactions).  414 GWh of natural gas were traded on a monthly market, in total 3 transactions were concluded: 1 of them in Lithuania and 2 in Finland. Together with increased trading volume the record volume of one transaction (373 GWh) was captured in February as well. In total 44 participants actively submitted orders and all of them successfully concluded transactions.

Growing competition has also made an impact to natural gas prices. Baltic-Finnish Gas Spot Index (BGSI) which captures daily market gas prices changes, value in February 2020 was 13.54 EUR/MWh (January 2020 – 14.98 EUR/MWh). Participants concluded transactions in Lithuanian market area paid the weighted average price of 11.98 EUR/MWh (↓18%), in Latvian-Estonian common market area – 12.10 EUR/MWh (↓16%), in Finnish market area – 15.91 EUR/MWh (↓2%).
