The growth of trading volumes and record low prices marks the beginning of summer 2020
In June 2020 by concluding 1,448 transactions, traded volume amounted to 654 GWh – the highest summer volume since the beginning of GET Baltic’s operations. Comparing to the same period last year (71 GWh) it increased even 9 times and comparing to May 2020 (429 GWh) 52% more of natural gas was traded. Traded volume grew in all market areas: 76% more natural gas was purchased in Lithuanian market area, 94% more in common Latvian-Estonian market area, and 16% growth was captured in Finland.
In June 2020 downward trend of natural gas prices is captured on GET Baltic exchange for the sixth month in a row. The average price in a daily market settled at the lowest average price – 7.91 EUR/MWh. As individual transactions prices fluctuated between 4.67 EUR/MWh and 9.1 EUR/MWh, the lowest transaction price in the history of GET Baltic was recorded: the transaction was concluded in the common Latvian-Estonian market area for 4.67 EUR/MWh. The number of exchange participants actively submitted orders also increased – in total 48 participants actively submitted orders and 47 of them successfully concluded transactions.
Baltic-Finnish Gas Spot Index (BGSI) which captures daily market gas prices changes, value in June 2020 was 7.91 EUR/MWh (May 2020 – 8.36 EUR/MWh). Participants concluded transactions in Lithuanian market area paid the weighted average price of 7.81 EUR/MWh (↓7%), in Latvian-Estonian common market area – 7.81 EUR/MWh (↑2%), in Finnish market area – 8.18 EUR/MWh (↓4%). Baltic-Finnish Gas Monthly Index (BGMI), which captures monthly market gas prices changes, value in June 2020 was 7.69 EUR/MWh.
