In February, the GET Baltic gas exchange operating in the Baltic States and Finland saw a record monthly trading volume of 1.36 TWh of natural gas. This is the highest volume of gas traded in a single month in the history of the exchange. The record trading volume was achieved with more than 3,700 transactions.

“As every year, the winter season is the most active period in the gas sector. The colder temperatures in February contributed to the record volume of traded gas. Compared to January, trading turnover on the exchange increased by 21%. Two-thirds, or nearly 900 GWh of gas, were purchased at the Lithuanian market area in February,” said Giedrė Kurmė, CEO of GET Baltic.

In February, the average gas price on the GET Baltic exchange was 54.75 euros per megawatt-hour (EUR/MWh), which is 12% higher than in the first month of the year, when the average price was 48.92 EUR/MWh. In Lithuania, the gas price increased by 12% to 55.45 EUR/MWh, while in the common Latvia-Estonia market area and Finland, it rose by 11%. In Latvia and Estonia, the price reached 53.44 EUR/MWh, and in Finland, it climbed to 54.09 EUR/MWh.
