In March, the average price of natural gas on the GET Baltic exchange, operating in the Baltic countries and Finland, was 42.83 euros per megawatt-hour (EUR/MWh). This is 22% lower than in February when the price was 54.75 EUR/MWh.
A similar price level was observed in all GET Baltic market areas. In the Lithuanian market area, the average gas price in March was 43.48 EUR/MWh or 22% lower than in February. In the common Latvian-Estonian market area, the gas price also decreased by 22% to 41.77 EUR/MWh, while in Finland the average gas price was 42.72 EUR/MWh, or 21% lower than last month. Individual transaction prices on the exchange ranged between 35 EUR and 65 EUR/MWh in March.
“The recent decline in gas prices is a natural market factor driven by seasonality. As the weather warms up and the heating season comes to an end, the demand for gas slows down and the gas price curve gradually moves downward”, says Giedrė Kurmė, CEO of GET Baltic.
After reaching a record monthly trading volume of 1.36 TWh of natural gas in February, trading activity on the exchange remained strong in March. A total of 0.9 TWh of gas was traded last month. More than half of this volume—464 GWh (54%)—was purchased in the Lithuanian market area, while 193 GWh (22%) was traded at the common Latvian-Estonian market area, and 209 GWh (24%) in Finland. A total of 57 exchange participants actively placed orders.
In the first quarter of 2025, nearly 10,000 transactions were executed on the GET Baltic exchange, with a total of 3.4 TWh of natural gas traded. This represents an increase of 500 GWh compared to the first quarter of 2024, when 2.9 TWh of gas was traded. Additionally, three new participants from Poland and Belgium joined the GET Baltic exchange during the first quarter of the year.
